Re: Cars your relatives owned when you were a kid.
We once had a brand new beige coloured Datsun Sunny.

My old man was always swapping his cars, we had a Hillman imp, VW beetle, triumph 2000 and a battered old rover. Everyone was a pile of shit 😁

My old man seemed to have a new motor every week and the story was always the same:

'Boy, jump in the new motor and let's go for a spin'.

''Why did you sell the old one dad?'

'It was a wanker but this is something special that I got down the car auctions'.

Next week:

'Boysie, got a new motor, jump in and we'll go for a spin'.

'But dad, you said the car you bought last week was diamond?'

'Nah, it was a wanker and I had to get rid of it. This one's a darlin' though'.

Rinse and repeat. He must have got through a hundred cars a year, the mad bastard. I fucking miss him at times like this.

Funny you should mention the Flintstones - one of our neighbours offered me a lift to the local library in his motorcycle sidecar, which had holes big enough to actually get both your feet through. After the first trip, I was sufficiently terrified to avoid letting him know where I was going in the future.

Arf! @ geep

Anyone who was a kid In the 70s, whose dad had a British-built car, experienced the Flintstones-like can-see-the-road-through-the-floor experience.

Never paid much attention to the make.

But , as a kid, I've been in several vehicles where you could see the road through the floor.

My old man (God rest his soul) had a taxi firm but he used to buy any old shit, Moskvich, early Ladas, Vauxhall Viva, Ford Granada (thought I was Jack Reagan in that) and loads more.

It's fair to say in our road when I was a kid in the 70s that not many people owned cars at all but there was a car I was really drawn to.
It was an orange Bond bug. A futuristic 3 wheeler that tried to look sporty. You didn't see many back then and I've no idea if there are any still about. Very odd looking cars.

My old man worked in advertising, so throughout the 80's I remeber him always having a company car that daft and totally unsuitable to carting two kids around when it was his turn to have my sister and I (my mum had left him by this point and I remember her kicking off about them a couple of times)

He had an Audi Quattro, remember the boot coming off in his hands when he opened it. Also had a Toyota Supra, then one with the pop-up headlights.

He became a bit more sensible as my sister and I got older, which was fortunate. Was driving home from my nans in East Ham one night in a BMW M6, going over a railway bridge and a car comes blind over the bridge on the wrong side of the road and hits us head on. Only real thing I remember was the BMW's front bumber had come off, while the other car you couldn't even tell what it was. Found out when I was a bit older that the other driver was killed - post-mortem found he was off his tits.

Then the arse fell out the advertising industry, he went crazy and moved up north - last time I saw him he had an big orange VW van that looked like it would disolve like an enormous berocca if there was a heavy rain.

My step-dad had an original Dacia Dusta when he got together with my mum, which was mental fun but an absolute death trap. Funnily enough that went and was replaced by somethig dull - an Audi 80, followed by a Peugeot 405 I think

69 Chevy Impala dull red (in my mind) station wagon.

I was a child so had no reason to understand but it was years later that I learned the juice that thing had.

V8 350ci (255hp) - and that was just middle of the range.

I do remember it humming very loudly.

Many others, of course but at that time a 3 ton Dodge and later the first thing I drove other than the tractor - a Chevy Suburban.

My Grandad had a three wheel Reliant Robin in the 80’s, even my Dad was embarrassed to get in it!
